Are You Potted or Planted?

A potted plant can be beautiful for a season—it’s easy to move around, it looks healthy for a while, and it can even bloom. But its growth is limited. The roots can only spread so far before they hit the edge of the container. Eventually, it becomes root-bound, unable to grow deeper or stronger.

Being planted is different. A planted tree’s roots stretch wide and deep into the soil, drawing from the water and nutrients it needs to withstand storms, bear fruit, and stand firm for years. It’s not easily uprooted because it has found its place.

Spiritually, some of us are “potted” Christians—we love God but avoid commitment. We attend when convenient, serve only when it fits our schedule, and move whenever something feels uncomfortable. This may keep us safe from challenges, but it also keeps us from maturing.

God calls us to be planted—deeply rooted in Him, connected to His people, and committed to growing even when it’s hard. Psalm 92:13 says, “Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.” Planted believers can endure storms, produce fruit, and provide shade and shelter to others.

Today, ask yourself—am I just potted in my faith, or am I truly planted where God can grow me?

Prayer:
Lord, I don’t want to just look alive—I want to truly live in You. Plant me deep in Your Word, Your presence, and Your will. Help me stay rooted even when it’s uncomfortable, so I can grow strong and bear fruit for Your glory. Amen.
